Trustees:

Please see note below from Dr. Barbara Beno, President of AACJC, and
then click on to the press release issued today by the Accrediting
Commission about City College. We will need to add this to our
accreditation website on Monday.

As you will learn when reading the press release, this is why I am so
cautious about what we say publicly regarding the accreditation process,
the Commission or its findings. In this case, they are saying that
misstatements were made during the KQED Forum program this morning. I
also learned today that they also have a policy prohibiting any official
college representative of publicly criticizing the Commission (which
neither John nor I did although others did). I always knew it was a bad
idea but did not know it was prohibited.

Needless to say, we all need to keep this in mind from this point
forward. At next Tuesday’s board meeting this will be especially
critical. Not only will the meeting be broadcast live, the Commission
representatives will be in the audience.

As you might guess, it has been a very full three days and I do believe
we got our message out to a lot of people. In addition to the radio
shows, television and newspaper coverage, I held an Open Forum this
afternoon. Anita and Milton attended and there were more than 200 people
with standing room only and others outside the room. There were a number
of questions and comments.

One of the more outlandish ones (which I have heard elsewhere and is
being promoted by some) is that the Commission decision is a part of
some right-wing conspiracy. I refuted that as strongly as I could and
received a lot of applause for my comments. In general there was a
prevailing spirit of “Let’s fix this” or as I put it “Be committed to
doing whatever it takes to save our college!” Many staff volunteered to
be part of the working committees.

I have back-to-back meetings planned for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
designed to get the response process started. I have asked John and
Anita to be part of the Accreditation Response Team. If they decline,
then I will leave it to you all to decide who will be. I think it is
appropriate to have two trustees as part of the overall team. There may
be other committees where more trustees will be needed. We will have a
better idea of that after participating in Tuesday night’s workshop.

I also learned today that FCMAT may not be here until the end of July
and not present their findings until early September. I have made a
strong plea asking them and the Chancellor’s Office to find a way to
expedite that review. We needed it yesterday!

Hopefully the weekend will be a little more quiet. I will be in Modesto
on Saturday checking on my 89 year old father who is not doing well.
But, I will be in the city on Sunday if you would like to talk or have
any questions. Remember, if you receive a press inquiry, it is your call
to respond or not and you can always check with Larry (415. 290.7240) if
you want to either refer the call or talk to him before you respond.

Dear Chancellor Fisher:

The commission posted the attached press release this afternoon to
correct some of the mis-statements made during the FORUM program. The
statements, made by individuals representing CCSF, were about the nature
of the team report and the quality of CCSF.  At this time, the ACCJC
Press Release concerning CCSF is posted under “new on this website” on
the home page of www.accjc.org. In addition, the press release, team
report, action letter, PDN, and CCSF response are posted with the entry
for CCSF in the Directory of Accredited Institutions.  It will be
released to interested parties as the need arises.

Sincerely,

Barbara Beno
